Hello. Awhile ago, I inherited a R grade 8 gauge Parker brothers shotgun. Overall, it's in fine antique condition and made in 1883. I'm just trying to get an overall value for insurance purposes. It came with all of its original reloading tools and Winchester leader

1901lever, I just joined this forum and was looking for people with 8 gauge shotguns. I have a Bonehill that I have developed a nice 1-1/4 ounce load for using the Winchester hull. This post is a few years old but if anybody is interested in the 8 gauge, please respond. Thanks, Squid Boy
I have heard that this is the place to go for the help I need. I have an 8 gauge ( yes 8 ) double barreled shotgun (side by side) manufactured by armi. the weight is approx 14-16 pounds and is approx 60" in length. the detached barrels alone are just over 39". the only marks other than the decorative lines and bird engravings that I can find on the weapon are on the stock.
Prior to 1924 the gauge would be indicated within a diamond. Post-1924 - A 12-70 in an Omega lying is the gauge and chamber length in mm., and would indicate the gun is chambered for 12ga 70mm - 2 3/4" length shells. Please note that many Belgian guns will be chambered for: 2 1/2" - 63mm 20g, 2 9/16" - 65mm 16g, and may be 2 5/8" 12g.
It takes 2 5/8" 8 ga and is SxS with 16" barrels. Black powder and no ejectors - you can see the hammer blows on the barrels when they were wrapped around a mandrel and hammer welded together. Top stamped "Property of Wells Fargo Coach Co." in uneven and varying depth letters.

8 Gauge guns can be used in some states for other hunting. I had a friend make adaptor tubes for another 8 gauge Purdey SxS that I have and it shoots 12ga shells. Both of these guns weigh in excess of 13 pounds and the recoil is not bad. Today, a 3" modern 12ga or 10ga gun with Hevishot will kill waterfowl more readly than an old 8 gauge BP gun.
I used my 20 gauge Sizemaster to deprime, reprime, drop powder, insert wad (with part of the cushion section cut out to allow for 13/16 ounce of shot) and drop shot. I used a 28 gauge MEC Super Sizer opened up to size the 24 gauge brass and to hold it securely in position on my drill press table while rolling the crimp with a GAEP roll crimp head.
