The word surah was used at the time of Muhammad as a term with the meaning of a portion or a set of verses of the Qur'an. This is evidenced by the appearance of the word surah in multiple locations in the Quran such as verse : "a sûrah which We have revealed and made ˹its rulings˺ obligatory, and revealed in it clear commandments so that you may be mindful."

Many of these verses are very short. The chapter is named from the word Ash-Shu'ara in ayat 224. [2] It is also the longest Meccan surah according to the number of verses. The chapter talks about various prophets and their tribes, and how the disbelievers were destroyed after threatening the prophets with death.
Being the last chapter of the Quran, it is a kind of final response to the invocation that the reader of the Quran is implored to make to God in Quran 1 (Al-Fatihah). The response is that even though God has provided detailed guidance, the seeker of guidance must also pray to God that he remains free from the 'whisper' (waswāsa) of the Satan.
