The tunnel is the second longest vehicular tunnel in Latin America, after the Tunel de la Línea, and is expected to be surpassed by the under-construction Toyo Tunnel, both of which are also in Colombia. The entire project is made up of two tunnels—the main 8.2 km long tunnel and a shorter 774-metre (2,539 ft) long-tunnel—and nine viaducts.
The collapse of the Space Building occurred on the night of October 12, 2013, when Tower 6 of the Space Building, a residential apartment complex, collapsed in Medellín, Colombia, killing 12 people. [1] Local authorities evacuated the rest of the building to avoid an imminent new collapse. [2]
Preliminary construction on the dam began in September 2011 and the power plant was expected to begin operations in late 2018, but will not after heavy rainfall and landslides in April/May 2018 blocked the river's diversion tunnel, threatening a breach of the dam.
