National records in athletics are the marks achieved by a nation's best athlete or athletes in a particular athletics event. These records are ratified by the respective national athletics governing body. A national record may also be the respective continental record (also called "area record" (AR)), or even the world record (WR) in that event.
World Athletics maintains its official Area Records (continental records), in this case the North American, Central American and Caribbean records, which include the best marks set in an event by an athlete who competes for a member federation of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association.
Most records are subject to ratification by the governing body for that record. On the world level, that is World Athletics.Each body has their own procedure for ratifying the records: for example, USA Track & Field (USATF), the governing body for the United States, only ratifies records once a year at their annual meeting at the beginning of December.
