M-1965 OG-107 Field Jacket with 4th Infantry Division patch . The M-1965 Field Jacket (also known as M65, M-65 Field Jacket, and Coat, Cold Weather, Man's Field), named after the year it was introduced, [1] is a popular field jacket initially designed for the United States Army under the MIL-C-43455 [2] standard by Alpha Industries.
The M-1951 field jacket was based on the M-1943 field jacket. [2] The M-1951 was given snap fasteners instead of buttons and an aluminium zipper.Earlier issue M-1951s had larger, brown buttons like on the M-1943, and later jackets had smaller brown, then green buttons as used on the M-1965 field jacket and later OG-107 fatigues.
The jacket was modeled after a civilian windbreaker design, and was constructed of an olive drab shade 2 cotton poplin outer shell with a dark olive drab blanket wool flannel lining, with shell color on new jackets was a pale pea-green color, but faded fairly quickly with heavy use and sun exposure to the more common beige-green.
The standard-issue M44 Wool Field Jacket, made of fine-quality OD 33 wool, was originally designed as a liner to be worn under the M1943 combat jacket. While originally intended as a field or combat jacket, it was nearly always reserved for service or dress wear.
The latest version of the jacket, the M-1965 field jacket, is still in service, though now made of a tougher cotton/nylon blend with polyester fill in the liner, and comes in the modern Army Operational Camouflage Pattern. It is no longer used for combat operations having been superseded by the Gen II and Gen III Gore-Tex parkas. [1]
The different material was given the color code OG-108. When worn in the field, the wool uniform was intended as an insulating layer worn under the M-1951 field jacket (later replaced by the revised M-1965 field jacket) and a pairs of cotton shell trousers with cargo pockets. The wool uniform remained authorized until the mid 2000s.
