Metoclopramide is a medication used to treat nausea, vomiting, gastroparesis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. [5] It is also used to treat migraine headaches. [6]Common side effects include feeling tired, diarrhea, akathisia, and tardive dyskinesia.
Examples of specific antimigraine drug classes include triptans (first line option), ergot alkaloids, ditans and gepants. Migraines can also be treated with unspecific analgesics such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen. Opioids are not recommended for treatment of migraines.
Prochlorperazine, generally by intravenous, is used to treat migraine. [ 15 ] [ 16 ] Such use is recommended by The American Headache Society. [ 8 ] A 2019 systematic review found prochlorperazine was nearly three times as likely as metoclopramide to relieve headache within 60 minutes of administration.
Paracetamol relieves pain in both acute mild migraine and episodic tension headache. [ 16 ] [ 17 ] At a standard dose, paracetamol slightly reduces fever; [ 14 ] [ 18 ] [ 19 ] it is inferior to ibuprofen in that respect, [ 20 ] and the benefits of its use for fever are unclear, particularly in the context of fever of viral origins.
