An early wooden bridge spanning the Rhône between Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Avignon was built between 1177 and 1185. This wooden bridge was destroyed forty years later in 1226 during the Albigensian Crusade when Louis VIII of France laid siege to Avignon. Beginning in 1234 the bridge was rebuilt with 22 stone arches.
In 1447, during the residency of Bishop Pierre de Foix, who was the papal legate in Avignon, [4] the town council acquired the apostolic palace from the Benedictines of the Convent of St. Laurence and converted it for municipal use. In 1775, the building became the Hôtel de Graveson when it was bought by Jean-Baptiste de Graveson. He was a direct descendant of Antoine d'Amat de Graveson, who, in 1652, married Marguerite de Crillon, granddaughter of Louis des Balbes de Berton de Crillon, for whom the Place Crillon in Avignon (where the hotel is located) was named.
