A former trash-company supervisor, Gilyard is believed to have raped and murdered at least 13 women and girls from 1977 to 1993. Utah (West Jordan) Scott D. Randell of Sandy was shot multiple times by a West Valley City police officer in the cul-de-sac of a West Jordan neighborhood. The shooting happened about 2:30 a.m.. Police believe Randell was one of two men who fled from police several hours earlier after being stopped while driving a reported-stolen car.
