Saint Michael's Church is a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford. The church is located in Galena, Illinois , United States , at 227 South Bench Street in Galena. The parish is named after the Archangel Michael , and is seated on a hill overlooking downtown Galena.
St. Michael's parish was founded by the Rev. Demetrius Gallitzin and it was named for the patron saint of Michael McGuire, who was the first settler in the area in 1788. [1] The parish has had four different church buildings in its history. The first church was built of white pine logs in 1799. The second church was a frame structure built in 1817.
Later it would only be used as St. Michael School. Then, in 1866, the cornerstone for the present church was laid. The large 187-foot steeple wasn't added until 1883. The unrest began when the Catholic Bishop Francis Kenrick petitioned the Public School Board to allow use of the Douay-Rheims (Catholic) translation of the Bible by Catholic students, instead of forcing them to use the Authorized (King James/Protestant) Version as did other students.
