    Or compare a straw hat to a baseball cap. I don't know when beanie made the transition from kids' fabric or felt cap to a knit cap, but it wasn't so in the fifties and sixties. The beanie was not with a propeller earlier, I think that came from a fad that was picked up in cartoons. Anecdotally first I heard beanie for knit cap was in the 80s.
