The Venturi effect is the reduction in fluid pressure that results when a moving fluid speeds up as it flows from one section of a pipe to a smaller section. The Venturi effect is named after its discoverer, the 18th-century Italian physicist Giovanni Battista Venturi .
Pressure reduction may be static, as in a piston and cylinder arrangement, or dynamic, as in the case of a vacuum cleaner when air flow results in a reduced pressure region. When animals breathe, the diaphragm and muscles around the rib cage cause a change of volume in the lungs.
The second type of decompression changes from exceptionally high pressure (many atmospheres) to normal atmospheric pressure (one atmosphere) as may occur in deep-sea diving. The first type is more common as pressure reduction from normal atmospheric pressure to a vacuum can be found in both space exploration and high-altitude aviation.
Pressure regulator or pressure reducing valve (PRV): reduces pressure to a preset level downstream of the valve; Pressure sustaining valve, or back-pressure regulator: maintains pressure at a preset level upstream of the valve; Presta valve, Schrader valve, or Dunlop valve, holds the air inside bicycle tires; Pulse valve, extremely fast pulsing ...
In thermodynamics, the reduced properties of a fluid are a set of state variables scaled by the fluid's state properties at its critical point. These dimensionless thermodynamic coordinates, taken together with a substance's compressibility factor, provide the basis for the simplest form of the theorem of corresponding states.
Diagram symbols for pressure reduction and back pressure regulators. The conceptual difference is mainly in which side the feedback is taken from. A pressure regulator is a valve that controls the pressure of a fluid to a desired value, using negative feedback from the controlled pressure. Regulators are used for gases and liquids, and can be ...
Example 3.5 and p.116 Bernoulli's principle can also be derived directly from Isaac Newton's second Law of Motion. When fluid is flowing horizontally from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure, there is more pressure behind than in front. This gives a net force on the volume, accelerating it along the streamline. [a] [b] [c]
Flash evaporation (or partial evaporation) is the partial vapor that occurs when a saturated liquid stream undergoes a reduction in pressure by passing through a throttling valve or other throttling device. This process is one of the simplest unit operations.
