During the Civil War, the house was used by Confederate General John Bell Hood in his preparation before the Battle of Nashville of December 15–16, 1864. [ 3 ] In 1878, the cottage was purchased by James Erwin Caldwell , the president of the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company, which installed the Bell System in the American South. [ 3 ]
The area started in the early 1800s as a rural Nashville neighborhood. Many wealthy people and professionals from Nashville built estates in Edgefield. The outlaw Jesse James lived in Edgefield and his address was 712 Fatherland Street. In 1869 Edgefield became a city, and in 1880, it was annexed by the city of Nashville. [2]
The mansion was built in 1859 for David H. McGavock (1826–1896), a cousin of the McGavocks who owned the Carnton plantation in Franklin, Tennessee, and his wife William "Willie" Elizabeth Harding (1832–1895), whose family owned the Belle Meade Plantation.
Farm first settled in 1830 by Joseph Williamson and family in the small community of Liberty just east of Granville. Historic home built in 1850 by Andrew Jackson Vantrease. Samuel Sampson Carver purchased property in 1890, operating a saw mill, blacksmith shop, and general store in addition to his agricultural uses.
