Whitewater Preserve is a nature preserve owned and managed by The Wildlands Conservancy, a nonprofit land conservancy. Consisting of 2,851 acres (11.54 km 2 ) of land in Riverside County, California , the preserve features the perennial Whitewater River flowing through a desert canyon.
This section of the state forest has campgrounds at some of the larger nature reserves like Whitewater Lake, Ottawa Lake, and Pinewoods. There are also several horse-accessible campsites for trail riding. Some more well-known trails throughout the Southern Unit are the Ice Age Trail, Scuppernong Trails, John Muir Trails, and Emma Carlin Trails. [3]
The forest includes 250 miles (400 km) of hiking trails, almost 100 miles (160 km) of cross-country ski trails, 130 miles (210 km) of equestrian trails, 150 miles (240 km) of snowmobile trails, 75 miles (121 km) of off-road bicycle trails including 30 miles (48 km) of singletrack trail, and 750 campsites.

From 1995 to 2000, the organization established a set of preserves in Southern California, including the San Bernardino Mountains and desert canyons. The conservancy acquired a historic trout hatchery and rehabilitated the area in 2005, resulting in the creation of the Whitewater Preserve, which provided access to the San Gorgonio Wilderness. [2]
