Harrisburg (/ ˈ h ær ɪ s b ɜːr ɡ, ˈ h ɛər z-/) is a city in and the county seat of Saline County, Illinois, United States. [2] It is located about 55 miles (89 kilometers) southwest of Evansville, Indiana, and 111 mi (179 km) southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.
It was also known as Absher, [1] though that name had fallen into disuse by the mid 20th century. The post office was established as Absher on 27 July 1892 and named for the first postmaster, William A. Absher. [2] [3] The name changed to Dykersburg on 10 September 1898. On 17 April 1899, it changed back to Absher.

Three major towns in Saline County are connected by U.S. Route 45, and formerly by the now-abandoned Cairo and Vincennes/Big Four/New York Central Line, from north to south: Eldorado, Harrisburg, and Carrier Mills.
