In May 2018, a school bond was passed which included the demolition of the original Wink High School. In November 2018, despite the disapproval of the Texas State Historical Association, superintendent Scotty Carman and the Wink-Loving ISD school board voted to proceed with the demolition of the historic 90-year-old high school to make room for future development.
Wink was a temporary childhood home to singer and songwriter Roy Orbison, although he was born in Vernon, Texas. James Ross Callahan (December 19, 1920 – March 27, 1998) was an American football player. Born in El Paso, Texas, Callahan attended Wink High School where he played football and basketball, ran track and threw both the discus and the javelin.
