In 1967, under the leadership of Dr. Thangaraj, the college started a self-assessment to develop a plan for the future. [1] In 1973, it submitted an application to Madurai Kamaraj University, which in turn sent a recommendation to the University Grants Commission that autonomous status be conferred on the school, which was accepted. [1]
Samuel A Morman, the granddaughter of Dr. Daniel Poor, was the key person to build the library building by donating $25,000 to the American Board of Missionaries on January 26, 1926. [1] Between 1914 and 1920, J. A. Sanders was the first librarian. The stack room at the library houses more than 76,000 volumes. [2]

After matriculation, Sankaraiah studied history from the American College, Madurai beginning in 1937. He was one of the founders of the Madras Students organization and was elected secretary of the Madurai Students Union. During this time he started participating in the freedom struggle of India.
Sankaran was born on 22 October 1934 in Thanjavur, [7] in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu in a Tamil Brahmin family. [8] He graduated in Commerce with honours from American College, Madurai, coming first in the examination, and joined there as a lecturer [9] when he was inducted into Indian Administrative Service in 1956. [10]
