Heronswood (gardens and nursery) was established by Dan Hinkley and Robert Jones in 1987, on a 10 acres (40,000 m 2) site, later expanded to 15 acres. [1] The display gardens exhibit plant varieties that were collected from around the world, then tested and propagated for introduction into the North American nursery trade.
Daniel John Hinkley is an American plantsman, garden writer, horticulturist and nurseryman. He is best known for establishing Heronswood Nursery, in Kingston, Washington; and Windcliff, on the Kitsap Peninsula near Indianola, WA; [1] and for collecting, propagating, and naming varieties of plants new to the North American nursery trade.
Located on the Mornington Peninsula, Heronswood is the home of The Diggers Foundation. Heronswood is listed on the Register of the National Estate. [2] It is also listed in Oxford Companion to Gardens as one of only four gardens in Victoria, alongside the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, Mawallock and Rippon Lea.
