Colby opened the season on the road, facing down two-time defending state champion Bowdoin. Defying prediction, the Mules took control of the game form the start and barely allowed the home team an opening. The offense looked far better than it had a year before, scoring once per period, but it was on the defensive side that Colby raised eyebrows.
Jack McGowan scored the only Colby goal in the loss. A few days later, the campus rink was in good enough shape for the match with Bates, however, the team was not. Missing Bill Millett, the shorthanded Mules were unable to get any sort of offense going against the Garnet and surrendered the first game of the in-state series to the visitors. [3]
Colby, for the second time that day, played much better in the latter part of the game and tied the match in the third. Both squads scored in the first overtime despite being exhausted. With neither team using alternates, the same twelve men had been skating up and down the ice for 95 minutes already and they looked ready to collapse.
The Colby Mules women's ice hockey program represents Colby College. The team used to compete in the ECAC. Currently, the club is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The Mules were one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
