The area around the bay was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 as historic district number 74000713 in 1974. The state registry lists it as site 10-37-4150. [ 15 ] The south end of the bay became Kahaluʻu Beach County Park in 1953, a popular snorkeling spot, although the beach is rocky with some gray sand.
Hawaii Route 11 passes through the community, leading northeast 76 miles (122 km) to Hilo and northwest 46 miles (74 km) to Kailua-Kona. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 36.8 square miles (95.3 km 2), all of it land. [2] The area is prone to earthquakes. [7]
