It has become a standard of the wind ensemble/concert band repertoire. Based on the writings of Carlos Castaneda, the work consists of seven movements. [1]
Carlos Castaneda (December 25, 1925 [nb 1] – April 27, 1998) was an American anthropologist and writer. Starting in 1968, Castaneda published a series of books that describe a training in shamanism that he received under the tutelage of a Yaqui "Man of Knowledge" named don Juan Matus.
Due to the complexity of the song, it has never been performed live in full, although excerpts from it have been interspersed with other songs in concert, such as with "Take to the Sky". "Dātura" was created partially through improvisation with drummer Matt Chamberlain at her studio, Martian Engineering in Cornwall , England .
