Dec. 18—With just a few short days to go before it wraps up its annual Red Kettle Campaign, the Salvation Army is issuing one last call for volunteers to help them make goal for this year.
About 1,500 meals were prepared to be served at the Phoenix Convention Center and about 3,000 were prepared to be delivered by the Salvation Army.
John Arnold van Hengel (February 21, 1923 – October 5, 2005) was a grassroots activist and entrepreneur credited as being the "Father of Food Banking". [1] In 1967, van Hengel founded St. Mary's Food Bank, the world's first food bank in Phoenix, Arizona.
Previous membership statistics (as quoted from 2010 year book) include 16,938 active and 9,190 retired officers, 39,071 Corps Cadets and more than 4.5 million volunteers. Members of the Salvation Army also include "adherents"; these are people who do not make the commitment to be a soldier but who recognise the Salvation Army as their church.

Upon her death in 2003, Kroc bequeathed $1.5 billion (equivalent to $3 billion in 2023) to The Salvation Army solely for the purpose of establishing centers of opportunity, education, recreation and inspiration throughout the United States to be known as "Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers".
