Pomacea bridgesii, common name the spike-topped apple snail or mystery snail, is a South American species of freshwater snail with gills and an operculum, an aquatic gastropod mollusk in the family Ampullariidae. These snails were most likely introduced to the United States through the aquarium trade.
Some species deposit their egg masses among cold-water corals, kelp, stones, or xenophyophores and males will sometimes guard the egg mass. [ 3 ] [ 27 ] [ 29 ] [ 30 ] At least one species, Careproctus ovigerus of the North Pacific, practices mouth brooding where the male snailfish carries the developing eggs around in his mouth.
Eggs of intermediate size were rarely seen. Even in the largest eggs, no structures were found that indicate the development of the embryo within the eggs. [1] There are indications that the larvae of P. swirei and at least some other hadal fish spend time in the open water at relatively shallow depths, less than 1,000 m (3,300 ft). [8]

The most common apple snail in aquarium shops [citation needed] are Pomacea bridgesii and Pomacea diffusa, (both called mystery snails or spike-topped apple snails, among other things). These species come in different colours from brown to albino or yellow and even blue, purple, pink, and jade, with or without banding.
The sand collar consists of sand grains cemented together by a gelatinous matrix, with the embedded eggs contained within the matrix. The collar is laid by the female moon snail, and the size of the sand collar gives an indication of the size of the adult female moon snail that laid it; larger species of moon snail lay larger sand collars.
