Bloomington businessman Jesse W. Fell founded the newspaper on January 14, 1837, [4] making it among the oldest still-operating businesses [5] in McLean County, [4] though the business lapsed during 1839-1845. [6] W. O. Davis and his heirs owned the Pantagraph for many years until selling the paper to Chronicle Publishing Company in 1980. [7]
The News-Times was founded on September 8, 1883 as the Danbury Evening News by James Montgomery Bailey. In 1933, it merged with the Danbury Times, which was founded on May 17, 1927, thereafter to be known as the Danbury News-Times. The Ottaway Community Newspapers chain purchased the paper in 1955.
Until 1988, the building housed the post office on its first floor and federal court operations on its upper two floors. After a new courthouse opened in Urbana, bankruptcy cases continued to be heard in Danville until 2013, when the building was mostly vacated.
