Little Lake was known as La Laguna Chiquita during the Mexican California era, and was part of Rancho Santa Gertrudes. [1] Early settlers of the community included the families of William Warren Orr (1833–1915) and James Warren Day (1836–1887), who give their names to Orr and Day Road.

Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes Union Elementary is the only school within the district. In the year 2021, 68.5% of the student population are White, 28.1% are Hispanic or Latino, 2.2% are multiracial, and 1.1% are African American.
It has schools in both Norwalk and La Mirada areas. The school district serves most of Norwalk and La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs (the NLM portion of Santa Fe Springs contains only business areas, no residents). John Lopez has been the superintendent of the school district since the 2020–2021 school year.
