The IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) is a core network subsystem within UMTS. It is based on the use of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)26 to initiate, terminate and modify multimedia sessions such as voice calls, video conferences, streaming and chat. SIP is specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)27.
An application instantiates the session with the Session Description Protocol (SDP) over Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) or other rendezvous methods. The MSRP protocol is defined in RFC 4975. [1] MSRP messages can also be transmitted by using intermediaries peers, by using the relay extensions defined in RFC 4976. [2]
