Sitti Nurbaya: Kasih Tak Sampai (Sitti Nurbaya: Unrealized Love, often abbreviated Sitti Nurbaya or Siti Nurbaya; original spelling Sitti Noerbaja) is an Indonesian novel by Marah Rusli. It was published by Balai Pustaka , the state-owned publisher and literary bureau of the Dutch East Indies , in 1922.
Siti Noerbaja was the first adaptation of Marah Roesli's 1922 novel Sitti Nurbaya. [1] The book, which Indonesian critic Zuber Usman writes was inspired by the writer's heartbreak after his family rejected him taking a non-Minangkabau wife, [3] was one of Balai Pustaka's most popular works, and had previously been adapted for the stage.
After more than 80 years, this book is still being constantly discussed and read. [2] In addition to Sitti Nurbaya, Marah Roesli also wrote several other novels. However, Sitti Nurbaya is the best known one. The novel received the annual price in literature from the Government of Indonesia in 1969, and has been translated to Russian. [3]

[1] In 1969, Belenggu received the first annual Literary Prize from the government of Indonesia, along with Marah Rusli's Sitti Nurbaya (1922), Salah Asuhan, and Achdiat Karta Mihardja's Atheis (Atheist; 1949). Initially printed as a serial, the novel had been published in 1940 by Pustaka Rakyat. [2] Ismail advertised it as the first film adaptation of an Indonesian novel. Siti Rukiah was born in Purwakarta, West Java on April 25, 1927. After her graduation, she pursued teaching in Purwakarta, before initiating her career into writing.
