It was established in 1961, by All Pakistan Memon Educational and Welfare Society through the financial help and efforts of late Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood and Mr. Abdul Ghani Dada Bhai Junani. The inauguration ceremony was performed by the then President of Pakistan , Field Marshal General Ayub Khan , on 30 July 1961.
The Federal Advisory Board was created in 1940 to fill the need for an organisation which could initiate, supervise and promote the publication of material in Sindhi language. In 1950, a more powerful executive committee was constituted, and in March 1955 the Sindhi Adabi Board was brought into being. [citation needed]

The institute was provided with a small room at the old campus of Sindh University in Hyderabad. On 10 December 1972 the foundation stone of the new building was laid just off the Super Highway in Jamshoro, adjacent to Indus river. The three-storey building, located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from Hyderabad, was inaugurated in 1978.
