East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 26,370 at the 2020 census . Centered around heavy industry, the city is home to the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal , an artificial freshwater harbor characterized by industrial and manufacturing activity.
The highway crosses over the Indiana Ship Canal and passes between industrial properties. SR 312 eastern terminus is at an interchange with US 12 and SR 912. Chicago Avenue continues east of US 12 and SR 912 as a short street, passing through more industrial properties before dead-ending at a railroad. [2] [3] [4]

The 13.5-mile (21.7 km) aqueduct begins at the Sudbury Dam, and passes through the towns of Southborough, Framingham, Wayland, and Weston. [2] In 1990, the route, buildings and bridges of the aqueduct were added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Weston Aqueduct Linear District .
The freeway runs east from exit 3 of the Indiana Toll Road and then meeting US 41 after that. At this point, the road then crosses a toll bridge above the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. After crossing the bridge, the portion ahead serves several of the steel mills (many now owned by Cleveland-Cliffs) and the casino in East Chicago.
