In the early 1900s, there were 328 plantations identified in North Carolina from extant records. [ 10 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] The Sloop Point plantation in Pender County, built in 1729, is the oldest surviving plantation house and the second oldest house surviving in North Carolina, after the Lane House (built in 1718–1719 and not part of a plantation).
Plantation founded by Joseph Gee, a native of Halifax County, North Carolina, circa 1816 in an Alabama River bend that retains his last name to the present. It passed to his nephews upon his death. They transferred it to their relative, Mark Harwell Pettway, also a native of Halifax County North Carolina, in 1845 in order to settle a $29,000 debt.

Hillside was designed by architect Charles C. Hartmann and built in 1929 for the businessman Julian Price and his wife, Ethel Clay Price. The house, a four-story, 31-room, 180-foot-long (55 m) dwelling in the Tudor Revival style, sits at 7,266 square feet (675 m 2 ).
