Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. They bought the recently closed Lohner & Co watch factory, and on 1 June 1904 the two men entered into a contract with the local mayor. They named their new watch company Oris after a nearby brook, and they began the industrial manufacture of pocket watches. [2]
The DIR diver must be aware of remaining gas supply at all times, as this is the critical requirement for survival. The diver must be aware of how much gas is needed to return to the surface from any point in the dive, and ensure that this, and a suitable safety margin, is available according to the dive plan. When saturation divers operate at great depths, they live under pressure in a saturation habitat with an atmosphere containing helium or hydrogen.Since helium atoms are the smallest natural gas particles—the atomic radius of a helium atom is 0.49 angstrom and that of a water molecule is about 2.75 angstrom—, they are able to diffuse over about five days into the watch, past the seals which ...
A lead weight of 1 kg would be replaced by an iron weight of 1 × (7.87/11.34) × ((11.34-1)/(7.87-1)) = 1.044 kg, a 4.4% additional load for the diver when out of the water. Iron is also corroded much more easily in seawater than lead, and would need some form of protection to prevent rusting.
