After a short period serving as a pastor at a church in Akron, Ohio, he attended Ohio State University, where he completed a PhD in philosophy in 1920, with a thesis in British idealism, entitled "Thought, Existence and Reality as Viewed by F.H. Bradley and Bernard Bosanquet." (His dissertation adviser was the idealist, Joseph Alexander Leighton.)
Cleanthes was born in Assos in the Troad, about 330 BC. [a] According to Diogenes Laërtius, [2] he was the son of Phanias, and early in life he was a successful boxer.With but four drachmae in his possession he came to Athens, where he took up philosophy, listening first to the lectures of Crates the Cynic, [3] and then to those of Zeno, the Stoic.
Stallo returned to Cincinnati and was there admitted to the bar in 1849, practicing law (in the firm of Stallo and Kittridge) except for a brief stint as judge of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas (in Ohio, a "trial court of general jurisdiction", according to Black's Law Dictionary) (1852–1855).
