Cemetery. Roman Catholic missionaries had settled in the area by 1875, serving both the Menominee and other white settlers. The cemetery for Roman Catholics and a burial ground for non-Roman Catholics were established soon after. [2] Under the direction of Father Blase Krake, the church was constructed in the 1890s.
Organized by Fr. J.N. Pfeiffer and the Irish Catholics of the area in 1859, St. Mary Parish was the first Roman Catholic church in Appleton. [2] [3] In 1860, a frame church was completed and dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus under the title “St. Mary of the Seven Dolors”. U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy is buried in the parish cemetery. [4]

St. Joseph's Parish was organized in 1842, the first Roman Catholic church in Waukesha. Solomon Juneau donated the first church building, which was a log cabin on the site of the current complex. In 1844 the parish built a stone church building, [ 3 ] which has since served as a parish hall, school, and medical clinic.

At its entrance, It has two eight-foot-tall statues which were placed there in 1958. The statue on the left depicts St. Mary, Help of Christians; and the one on the right depicts Saint Joseph, protector of the Carmelites. The inside of the church features mosaics of Discalced Carmelite founders Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross.

[1] On July 1, 2000, the parish of St. Lawrence merged with St. Hedwig's and St. Joseph-St. John to form the parish of St. Therese de Lisieux, based in Denmark , which continues to use the church as a worship space.
