Local on the 8s (or the Local Forecast) is a program segment that airs on the American network The Weather Channel.It provides viewers with information on current and forecasted weather conditions for their respective area; a version of this segment is also available on the channel's national satellite feed that features forecasts for each region of the United States.
WeatherStar (sometimes rendered Weather Star or WeatherSTAR; "STAR" being an acronym for Satellite Transponder Addressable Receiver) [1] is the technology used by American cable and satellite television network The Weather Channel (TWC) to generate its local forecast segments—branded as Local on the 8s (LOT8s) since 2002 and previously from 1996 to 1998—on cable and IPTV systems nationwide.
"Local on the 8s", a concept in which local forecasts aired in ten-minute intervals at times ending in "8," beginning at eight minutes past the hour, also made its debut. The first iteration of "Local on the 8s" was somewhat short-lived, only lasting until early 1998.
The network's music had been a source of interest for viewers, who had written in for years asking where they could purchase the music played during the "Local on the 8s" segment, broadcast 288 minutes each day. The 12-song compilation features the channel's most requested music. [2] [3]
