The Churchill River (French: Rivière Churchill) [1] [3] is a major river in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. From the head of the Churchill Lake it is 1,609 kilometres (1,000 mi) long. [ 2 ] It was named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and governor of the Hudson's Bay Company from 1685 to 1691.

The river is 856 km (532 mi) long and drains an area of 79,800 km 2 (30,800 sq mi), making it the longest river in Atlantic Canada .
This fort began as a log fort built in 1717 by James Knight of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and was originally called the Churchill River Post. In 1719, the post was renamed Prince of Wales Fort. It was located on the west bank of the Churchill River to protect and control the HBC's interests in the fur trade. [2]
The Churchill River flows through the lake. The community of South Indian Lake is located on the southeast shore, about 130 kilometres (81 mi) (by air) north of the city of Thompson . It had a population of 767 in 2011 and is the main settlement of the O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation , a First Nations band government .
The Churchill then led west to the Mackenzie River basin. The fur trade route ran from Cumberland House, Saskatchewan north up the Sturgeon-Weir River . At its source the 300-yard Frog Portage ran, with a 20-foot drop, to Trade Lake on the Churchill a few miles west of the mouth of Reindeer River .
