Lake Springfield is a 3,965-acre (16.05 km 2) [1] reservoir in the southeast of the capital city of Springfield, Illinois. It is 560 ft (170 m) above sea level. The lake was formed by building Spaulding Dam across Sugar Creek, a tributary of the Sangamon River. It is the largest municipally-owned body of water in Illinois. [1]
Lake Chicago’s initial outlet was to the southwest through the Des Plaines River valley, thence down the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico. The highest beach is the Glenwood Shoreline, which is 55 feet (17 m) to 60 feet (18 m) above the level of Lake Michigan.

Instead of being located in the relatively flat, rolling terrain characteristic of most of Illinois, the lake is located in an unglaciated zone of deep sandstone valleys and steep slopes. Devils Kitchen Lake is located in one of these valleys, and it is one of the deepest lakes in Illinois. Sections of the lake are as deep as 90 feet (27 m). [1]
Kinkaid Lake was built in 1968 with an average depth of 39 feet (12 m), although the area near the dam (on the southernmost tip) is approximately 80 feet (24 m) deep. The lake encompasses of 2,750 acres (11.1 km 2), which wind around the northwestern hills of Shawnee National Forest.
