For the genetic algorithm, see Chromosome (genetic algorithm). Chromosome (10 7 - 10 10 bp) DNA Gene (10 3 - 10 6 bp) Function A chromosome and its packaged long strand of DNA unraveled. Commonly, many people think the structure of a chromosome is in an "X" shape. But this is only present when the cell divides. Researchers have now been able to model the structure of chromosomes when they are active. This is extremely important because the way that DNA folds up in chromosome structures is linked to the way DNA is used.
A typical chromosome with its structures. Often, the centromere has a three layered covering known as Kinetochore. Diagram of a duplicated and condensed eukaryotic chromosome. (1) Chromatid – one of the two identical parts of the chromosome after S phase.
In the diagram, (1) refers to a chromatid: 1-half of two identical threadlike strands of a replicated chromosome.During cell division, the identical copies (called a "sister chromatid pair") are joined at the region called the centromere (2).
Chromomeres are organized in a discontinuous linear pattern along the condensed chromosomes (pachytene chromosomes) during the prophase stage of meiosis. [2] The linear pattern of chromomeres is linked to the arrangement of genes along the chromosome. [2] [3] Chromomeres contain genes and sometimes clusters of genes within their structure. [3]
The structure of the condensed chromatin is thought to be loops of 30 nm fibre to a central scaffold of proteins. It is, however, not well-characterised. Chromosome scaffolds play an important role to hold the chromatin into compact chromosomes. Loops of 30 nm structure further condense with scaffold, into higher order structures. [19]
Within chromosomes, DNA is held in complexes with structural proteins. These proteins organize the DNA into a compact structure called chromatin. In eukaryotes, this structure involves DNA binding to a complex of small basic proteins called histones, while in prokaryotes multiple types of proteins are involved.

Cell nucleus: A cell's information center, the cell nucleus is the most conspicuous organelle found in a eukaryotic cell. It houses the cell's chromosomes, and is the place where almost all DNA replication and RNA synthesis (transcription) occur.
