The 39th New Jersey Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment from the state of New Jersey that was raised to fight in the American Civil War.It was one of three units to be raised after President Abraham Lincoln called for five hundred thousand more men in July 1864 to finish off the Confederacy.
Collection of the records began in 1864; no special attention was paid to Confederate records until just after the capture of Richmond, Virginia, in 1865, when with the help of Confederate Gen. Samuel Cooper, Union Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck began the task of collecting and preserving such archives of the Confederacy as had survived the war.
The regiment was formed in 1864, and was composed of men who had been born as free men and others who had been formerly enslaved, but had been freed prior to their enlistment with the Union Army and the USCT. The 37th New Jersey Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Delaware in Trenton, New Jersey, and mustered into service on June 23, 1864, for a term of one hundred days. The regiment was commanded by a veteran of the Army of the Potomac, Col. E. Burd Grubb. The ranks contained more than 700 men, many of whom had previous military experience.
