It is one of three high schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District, along with Foothill High School and Village High School. Founded as Amador Valley Joint Union High School (AVJUHS), it graduated its first class in 1923. Major construction and renovations were undertaken after district voters approved bonds in 1922, 1965, 1997, and 2016.
In 1613, William Jones, a prominent merchant and haberdasher, gave the Haberdashers’ Company £6,000, followed by a further £3,000 bequeathed in his will on his death in 1615, to "ordaine a preacher, a Free-School and Almes-houses for twenty poor and old distressed people, as blind and lame, as it shall seem best to them, of the Towne of Monmouth, where it shall be bestowed". The boys' basketball team won the 2007 Central, Group III state sectional championship with a 52–48 win against Hightstown High School. [38] The 2007 boys indoor track team won every title possible, the 4x400 team was crowned group III and overall state champions, as well as winning the Group III outdoor title with a meet record time of 3:15.04.
