Pokémon: Master Quest is the fifth season of Pokémon known in Japan as Pocket Monsters: Episode Gold & Silver (ポケットモンスター金銀編, Poketto Monsutā Kin Gin Hen). It originally aired in Japan from August 9, 2001, to November 14, 2002, on TV Tokyo , in the United States from September 14, 2002, to October 25, 2003, on Kids' WB .
Mistaking a play rehearsal at the Super Pokémon Battle Show for an actual kidnapping of a Snubbull, Ash accidentally causes the show's star Gallade to be injured. Ash lets his Hawlucha understudy for Gallade while it recovers. Team Rocket tries stealing the Pokémon from the show. Ash's Hawlucha teams up with its Dark Hawlucha costar to beat them.
Ash is a young man who travels with various companions, aiming to fulfill his dream to become a Pokémon Master; his Pokémon lineup constantly changes over the course of the series, with its sole constant member being Pikachu, Ash's first Pokémon. Ash is loosely based on Red, the player character from the Generation I games Pokémon Red and Blue.
Ash realizes that the Spearow Ash threw the rock at in the beginning of his quest has since evolved into a Fearow, and soon carries Ash and Pikachu away, where they discover that a flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto are being threatened by the Spearow flock. Ash sends his Pidgeotto to guide them to safety, but is attacked by Fearow.

Heading to Violet City for the first gym, Ash and company meet Casey, a new trainer and baseball fan who eagerly challenges Ash to a battle. When Ash easily beats all three of her Pokémon with just his Charizard, she gets upset and makes an alliance with Team Rocket to get back at Ash, until she finds out that Team Rocket was just using her.
