The Musée d'Orsay (UK: / ˌ m juː z eɪ d ɔːr ˈ s eɪ / MEW-zay dor-SAY, US: / m juː ˈ z eɪ-/ mew-ZAY-, French: [myze dɔʁsɛ]) (English: Orsay Museum) is a museum in Paris, France, on the Left Bank of the Seine. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900.
The Bathers (French: Les Baigneuses) is an oil painting on canvas made between 1918 and 1919 by the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. After being given to the State by his three sons in 1923, it is currently kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. It is representative of Renoir's late work period (1892–1919).
From 1879-94 the painting was in the collection of the French painter Gustave Caillebotte; when he died it became the property of the French Republic as payment for death duties. From 1896-1929 the painting hung in the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. From 1929 it hung in the Louvre until it was transferred to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
The painting is 56.81 by 63.94 inches (1,443 mm × 1,624 mm), [3] displayed in a frame of Whistler's own design. It is held by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, [2] having been bought by the French state in 1891. It is one of the most famous works by an American artist outside the United States.
