John Wesley was born on 28 June [O.S. 17 June] 1703 in Epworth, 23 miles (37 km) north-west of Lincoln. He was the fifteenth child of Samuel Wesley and his wife Susanna Wesley (née Annesley). [2] Samuel Wesley was a graduate of the University of Oxford and a poet who, from 1696, was rector of Epworth.
