Founded in 1915, it is one of the Polish-American Roman Catholic parishes in New England in the Archdiocese of Hartford. In 2017, St. Adalbert was merged with St. Patrick Parish in Enfield to form St. Raymond of Penafort parish.

The priest's first Mass for the Polish congregation was celebrated on July 12, 1925, at a Central St. hall rented from an Italian society. The church was dedicated on September 6, 1926. Ten days later, St. Joseph School opened, staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Bishop Benedict Fenwick of Boston in 1829 purchased an existing Episcopalian church in Hartford to create Holy Trinity, the first Catholic church in the state. By the 1840s, the population in the region had grown sufficiently to move Fenwick to petition the Vatican for a diocese for Connecticut and Rhode Island .
