Groundwater accounts for over 60% of water use in Arkansas, and shallow aquifers providing high quality groundwater can be found throughout the state. In many upland regions of Arkansas, surface water interacts with groundwater via karst topography common to the Ozarks and Ouachitas. Groundwater monitoring is subdivided into twelve areas.
At the time of the Cambrian explosion, as multi-cellular became commonplace, Arkansas was primarily flooded by rivers and a shallow marine environment. In the Ozark region, calcareous, quartzose sand and clay deposited, while the Ouachita area witnessed the formation of alternating layers of sand, clay, silt and small amounts of lime mud. [2]
Bull Shoals Caverns is a limestone cavern located in Bull Shoals, Arkansas. The caverns were created approximately 350 million years ago, during the Ordovician period and were carved out by water method. The caverns were formed by water seeping into the cracks of the rocks, gradually enlarging the cracks and dissolving the surrounding rocks.
The Discovery Trail opened in 1977 and loops through a 1.2 miles (1.9 km) section of the cavern, descending to the lower level of the cave, 366 feet (112 m) underground, as well as to the Natural Entrance, about 100 feet (30 m) below ground at that point, following the stream bed of the springs that created the cavern.
