This list does not include characters that were present in older versions of the list but have since been removed (勺, 銑, 脹, 錘, 匁). Hyphens in the kun'yomi readings separate kanji from their okurigana. The "New" column attempts to reflect the official glyph shapes as closely as possible.

The jōyō kanji list was introduced, which included seven of the original 92 jinmeiyō kanji from 1951 (mentioned above), plus one of the 28 new jinmeiyō kanji from 1976 (also mentioned above); those eight were thus removed from the jinmeiyō kanji list. 54 other characters were added for a total of 166 name characters.
This is a simplified list, so the reading of the radical is only given if the kanji is used on its own. Example kanji for each radical are all jōyō kanji , but some examples show all jōyō (ordered by stroke number) while others were from the Chinese radicals page with non-jōyō (and Chinese-only) characters removed.
Some of the traditional kanji are not included in the Japanese font of Windows XP/2000, and only rectangles are shown. Downloading the Meiryo font from the Microsoft website (VistaFont_JPN.EXE) and installing it will solve this problem.
