Daniel David Murphy (born July 12, 1962, in Duluth, Minnesota) is an American musician best known as a co-founder [1] lead guitarist for the alternative rock band, Soul Asylum from 1981 to 2012. He is also a member of Golden Smog .
The band was originally called Loud Fast Rules, with a lineup consisting of Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, and Pat Morley. [1] They changed their name to Soul Asylum in 1983. [2] Morley was replaced by Grant Young in 1984. The band recorded three albums with Twin/Tone Records and two with A&M Records, with little commercial success.
Golden Smog reunited on July 12, 2019 to play a small "surprise" performance celebrating Dan Murphy's 57th birthday. [2] The show marked Murphy's first public musical performance since his retirement from Soul Asylum in 2012. [2] [3] Murphy was joined onstage by Johnson, Louris, and Perlman as well as Miles Zuniga of the band Fastball. [2]

The band's next album, Delayed Reaction (2012), received positive reviews and it entered the US album charts, but founding member Dan Murphy left the group at the end of the year. [1]
