The history of Middlesex University began during the 1880s, when two colleges, St Katherine's College and the Hornsey School of Arts and Crafts, started operations in north London. Both eventually became a part of Middlesex Polytechnic, which was later founded in 1973. Middlesex was awarded the title ‘University’ by Royal Assent in 1992.

DMC was established in 1989 as one of the first four Higher Colleges of Technology in the country. DMC's first home was a former car show room. With nine classrooms, two twenty-station computer labs, an electronics lab, a physics lab and a civil engineering lab, the college welcomed its first batch of 95 students on 9 September 1989.
Being the first private university in the UAE, it provides an American-style liberal education. [3] [4] AUD is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the UAE Ministry of Education. 2022–2023 enrollment was around 1,800 students. AUD has a faculty of over 110.
