Jun 16, 2011. #5. Re: Changing tire size on Jon Boat trailer. Not much reason to go from an 8" to a 12" other than it'll look better, and it'll make you feel better with bigger wheels. Those little 8" wheels look like they're just spinning their little guts out at 75MPH on the interstate! Good Luck!
Apr 3, 2024. #1. I am in need of a new jon boat trailer. Mine has turned into a headache and I’d rather be fishing that messing around with it. My boat is a 16x 54 flat bottom smoker craft. The trailer the boat is on is between 21 and 22 feet long and 66” between the fenders. Way more trailer than I need.
Aug 15, 2010. #2. Re: Jon boat trailer Build. I made a trailer for my 1436 john boat. I bought a $150 Harbor Freight trailer kit (on sale + 20% off coupon) and replaced the tongue with a 20' stick of 2.5 x 2.5 square steel tube. Once I figured out how long I needed the trailer I chopped off the tongue, welded on piece of the left over tongue ...
Messages. 22. Jul 5, 2009. #3. Re: Roller Bunks for flat bottom jon boat. Drum23, Yes, the ramp I use is a shallow angled one and I'm afraid I will drop the wheels off the back of it if I go in too far. I'm getting on in years and the lifting and pushing are starting to get to me. I found a pair of 4' roller bunks in Cabelas for about $80 that ...
Re: Weight of a small Jon boat and trailer? - Can I tow with a 1000 Lbs tow capacity? How to weigh a boat..... 1. First put the scale under the tongue with the boat pulled all the way up on the trailer. For this example, we will use a scale reading of 100lbs so W1=100 2. Scoot the boat back on the trailer EXACTLY 12" so 12=X 3. Re-weigh the tongue.

It won't hurt it if it hangs off a little bit for a short trip. Check around any school sailing programs, too; the boats they use have lightweight trailers and you may find one for sale.
The boat sits on 2 carpeted bunks 8 foot long with a jon boat carpeted bunk support up near the front of the boat for additional front support. The boat is secured to the trailer with a bow stop & winch hook in the front, 2 straps in the middle of the boat, and 1 transom strap at the rear.
Re: John Boat Trailer I did the Harbor Freight trailer thing too for my jon boat too. Bought one of their 42x48 trailers with 12" tires, added a 16' stick of 2.5x2.5 steel for the tongue, welded it up, painted it white Rusto, added some bunks and guide-ons. Been working great for 3 years now.
I rounded the guide-on top corners a bit and filed the two outer edges of the guide-on. Then I got the alu started in the 2" abs, and banged the top of the abs on the concrete floor. Gradually the alu slid down into the abs. ABS creeps in heat, so mine might loosen. The Jon should just slide through between them ok.
