The RTÉ Studio bombing was a 1969 bomb attack carried out by the Ulster Loyalist paramilitary group the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) in Dublin, Ireland. [1] It was the first Loyalist bombing in the Republic of Ireland during the Troubles .
On the same day as the London bombings, 11 bombs exploded in Northern Ireland: five bombs exploded in Belfast, which included a bomb at the Merville Inn pub; five other bombs exploded in Derry in less than an hour. The first bomb exploded at Ebrington Barracks, and another detonated beside the RUC Waterside station.
5 August – The Ulster Volunteer Force plant their first bomb in the Republic of Ireland, damaging the RTÉ Television Centre in Donnybrook, Dublin. No injuries. [1] 26 December – The UVF plant a bomb at the Daniel O'Connell statue on O'Connell Street. Little damage was done to the statue but the blast smashed windows in a half-mile radius. [2]
The UPV was also involved in the RTÉ Studio bombing on 5 August 1969. [citation needed] Shortly after the failed attack in Ballyshannon, a message was issued by the groups: "We wish to state that an active service unit from Northern Ireland was dispatched to undertake this task.
