The S.C. General Assembly ultimately decided to put the matter to a referendum before the voters in Greenwood County. Greenwood state Senator Frances B. Nicholson opposed the sale, and Greenwood state Representative John W. Drummond supported the sale. Drummond simultaneously challenged Nicholson in his bid for re-election to the senate seat.
The park is on Pennsylvania Route 305, 20 miles (32 km) south of State College. Within the park is Greenwood Lake, a 6-acre (2.4 ha) lake that is stocked with trout and which allows ice fishing during the winter. The dam that forms the lake is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Canoes, kayaks, rods and reels are available for rent at the park office. [2] In addition to tent and RV camping, guests can stay overnight in rooms at the lodge or can rent one of the one or two bedroom cabins located at the park. A rustic group lodge, sleeping up to 13 people, is also available for rental. [3]
The state park is located on Desportes Island on Lake Wateree, 17 miles from Winnsboro, SC and 14 miles from Ridgeway, SC. The 283-acre (1.15 km 2) site was acquired by the state in 1984 and offers 100 camping sites, picnic pads, an on-site tackle shop with boat refueling, and a 2-mile-long nature trail.
