Lower Back Pain. Lower back pain is very common. It often results from a strain (injury) to muscles or tendons in your back. Other causes include arthritis, structural problems and disk injuries. The pain often gets better with rest, physical therapy and/or medication.
Back pain can range from a muscle ache to a shooting, burning or stabbing feeling. Also, the pain can radiate down a leg. Bending, twisting, lifting, standing or walking can make pain worse.
Exercise often helps to ease back pain and prevent further discomfort. The following exercises stretch and strengthen the back and the muscles that support it. When you first start, repeat each exercise a few times.
Physical therapy and exercise for lower back pain usually focus on strengthening the flexor, extensor, and oblique muscles. This in turn helps reinforce support of the spine, thereby reducing low back pain.
